"Working in a smaller firm provides the opportunity to work closer with senior management, which in turn allows you to learn from the vast experience they have gained."
What was your background before Claritas?
I graduated from Durham University in 2014 and Southampton University in 2015. My degrees involved mainly science and research, however, my masters also included law and policy modules. I was looking for a job where I could use the variety of skillsets I acquired from my degrees as a foundation to build a career on and tax offered the perfect opportunity to do this.
I worked as a caseworker in the Wealthy Compliance Business Unit at HMRC for two years before joining Claritas as a graduate.
Claritas appealed to me because of the size of the firm and the variety of work they do. Whilst working at HMRC I mainly focused on personal tax issues of wealthy individuals, however, I wanted to broaden my knowledge and skills to other tax areas, Claritas presented a chance to do this.
Working in a smaller firm provides the opportunity to work closer with senior management, which in turn allows you to learn from the vast experience they have gained. A smaller company also enables you to form better working relationships with colleagues and provides a highly supportive environment to help you develop your career.
The combination of numerical, research and legislation skills I gained from university studies has given me the ideal foundation for a career in tax. An analytical approach to the challenges presented by the complex nature and ever-changing rules and regulations of tax, enables the team at Claritas to find an effective solution to the variety of scenarios we are presented with each day.
How has your experience of Claritas been so far?
When I joined Claritas, I instantly felt as though I was part of the team as everyone was so welcoming. I was given the opportunity to work on projects and contribute to the success of the firm from very early on, which was great. This can be daunting at first but the team has a vast amount of experience in a variety of tax areas so there is always a colleague who can help you if you are unsure of something.
The support from the team extends to your professional studies and the importance of your development is recognised by all. If you are struggling to understand anything from your studies, there is always someone around who is willing to answer your questions. All your colleagues have done professional exams and know what is involved, particularly the other graduates as they have recently gone through it. Having this network is invaluable, especially when you come back from a tough exam. There are also socials at least one month, which give you the chance to get to know the team better and shows how important a good work life balance is at Claritas.
